How can I help?

Scott Magdalein Jan 20

YouVersion has given away more than 3.9 million Bibles to-date and we get hundreds of offers from people all over the world asking what they can do to "give back" to YouVersion. There are many areas where YouVersion is available for help from the YouVersion community. If you're interested in helping in one of the following areas, fill out this form and make sure to clarify how you'd like to help and why.

(We've broken the volunteers roles down into levels of involvement based on the time commitment and skills required.)

Level 1: Spread the Word

YouVersion doesn't spend a penny on advertising. We depend 100% on the YouVersion community to spread the word (and the Word) about YouVersion's availability on the web and mobile devices. That means your tweets, blog posts, church announcements, and hallway conversations is what helps YouVersion spread and more Bible be give out for free.

A great place to step in and start helping in this area is on the YouVersion Facebook page at http://facebook.com/youversion. We'd love to have bunches of people there having conversations about the Bible, stories of how you've benefitted from having a digital Bible with you at all times, or even the implications of having the Bible in a digital format. The sky's the limit!

Time: None, just work it into your normal conversations online or in person.

Skills: Talking/typing. Seriously, anybody can help Spread the Word.

Level 2: YouVersion Community Support

The YouVersion community is growing faster and bigger than the YouVersion staff can support on our own. In fact, we hope this is always the case and that YouVersion's continued expansion is God-sized. But since YouVersion is continually larger than we can support internally, we need the help of the YouVersion community to help support itself. Here are a couple ways the YouVersion community can lend a hand in this area.

Time: Flexible. You can spend a few minutes each week helping to answer other people's questions or write full How-To articles.

Skills: Familiarity with YouVersion or any of our mobile applications

Level 3: Data Organization

Large amounts of data comes with the territory when you're dealing with dozens of Bible translations, reading plans, and lots of user-created content (like contributions). We need your help to manage that data, organize it all in a way that YouVersion can "understand", and make sure that standards for accuracy are kept high.

Time: 2 hours per week - This work usually comes in waves. One month we'll need a lot of help and then there won't be another "push" for a couple months.

Skills: Focus and an affinity for repetition

Level 4: Testing and Quality Assurance

As YouVersion continues to add new features, new Bible translations, new reading plans, and new mobile applications for emerging platforms, there is an ongoing need for tech-savvy users with an eye for details. If this role were to be summed up in a single phrase, it would be "breaking stuff and knowing how you did it."

Time: 2 hours per week

Skills: A solid understanding of the application you'll be testing, an eye for details, and the ability to provide a thorough explanation of any issues you find.

Level 5: Visual Design

YouVersion has a phenomenal design team. They have seemingly limitless amounts of creativity and skills. What they don't have is limitless amounts of time. There are regular needs for visual design that our internal design team can't get to, which means designers in the YouVersion community have a unique opportunity to give back. This will usually apply to new YouVersion UI elements, individual design elements for marketing (stuff like this), and sometimes print and video.

Time: 6-8 hours per month

Skills: Photoshop with great design taste - We'll also ask to see a portfolio and discuss design standards before any work is requested.

Level 6: Web Development

We have needs from time-to-time related to front-end and back-end web development that the internal developers either can't get to or can't figure out. Most of the time this will apply to cutting up visual designs or helping troubleshoot a bug.

Time: 6-8 hours per month

Skills: Thorough knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, Python, various server and database setups, and a propensity for problem-solving.

Level 7: Mobile Software Development

YouVersion's largest user-base is on mobile applications. We have applications for the iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Java (J2ME) and mobile web. We have plans to build applications for Palm's WebOS, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Maemo, more J2ME compatibility options, and many others. We will need ongoing help to keep all innovation moving forward with YouVersion on mobile devices.

Time: 6-8 hours per month

Skills: Extremely thorough knowledge of the mobile platform you're working on
